Carrying a phone and drinks can become awkward on a run, especially when you also want snacks or extra essentials. That is why I bought the Salomon ADV SKIN 12. The model featured here is the women’s ADV SKIN 12 W GRADIENT.
At first, I thought 12 litres sounded more suitable for trails and long distances than an ordinary run. After using it, I changed my mind. I like how the stretchy vest fits around my body without feeling loose when I carry less. It has been a purchase I am happy with, including for lighter runs.
My takeaway: it is worth considering if you want to carry drinks and use one vest for everyday runs and longer outings. If you only need your phone and keys, compare it with a running belt or a smaller vest first.

1. Fit mattered more than I expected
One of my biggest lessons was sizing. A smaller size than I initially expected felt right for me. Rather than fitting like a loose piece of clothing, I preferred the vest to sit close to my body with gentle pressure.
That does not mean everyone should size down. A vest that is too tight can be uncomfortable. When trying one on, check whether:
- It moves excessively when you make a gentle jumping motion.
- You can take a deep breath without uncomfortable pressure.
- Your arms move freely without rubbing at the shoulders or underarms.
- It remains comfortable with filled flasks in place.
- The front cords allow useful adjustment without having to force the fit.
Ask the shop before adding water or gear for a fitting. Testing a vest empty does not tell you everything about how it will feel when loaded.

Use the correct chest measurement chart
For reference, the official Japanese women’s ADV SKIN 12 W listing gives these chest measurements:
| Size | Chest measurement |
|---|---|
| XS | 81–86cm |
| S | 86–91cm |
| M | 91–96cm |
| L | 96–102cm |
Measure horizontally around the fullest part of your chest. Source: Salomon’s women’s size guide. Always use the chart attached to the exact product you are buying; women’s and unisex charts are not interchangeable.
2. The men’s and women’s versions felt different around my underarms
I also tried a men’s model and noticed a difference, particularly around my underarms. Because running involves repeated arm movement, that area was worth checking carefully rather than choosing by chest measurement alone.
This is my fitting experience, not a claim that every woman should choose the women’s version. If possible, compare the women’s and men’s or unisex versions. Swing your arms, check for excess material and pressure points, and choose the shape that works for you.
3. Is 12L too large for everyday runs?
I worried it might be more capacity than I needed for a shorter outing. In use, however, I did not feel as though I was always carrying a large backpack. I like the way the material follows my body even with fewer items inside.
That makes it useful to me on lighter runs as well as days when I want more room. Still, capacity is personal. If you only carry a phone and keys, a belt may be simpler.
| Your usual run | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Short outing with minimal items | A belt, pouch or smaller vest |
| Everyday run with drinks and snacks | Fit with your actual hydration and essentials |
| Longer training or trail outing | Space for layers and required equipment |
| Race | The event’s mandatory equipment list |
Choose around what you carry, rather than distance or capacity alone.
4. What I appreciate about stability
My favourite part is that the vest does not easily feel loose while I run. Its body-hugging material and adjustable front cords let me refine the fit.
That is not a promise of zero bounce for everyone. Size, load and water volume all affect how a vest moves. Try it in a setup close to your real use rather than judging it only when empty.

5. Included soft flasks add value for me
I appreciate having soft flasks included, rather than having to find separate bottles immediately. Soft flasks change shape as you drink, and carrying them at the front makes hydration accessible.
It is not a cheap vest, but I am satisfied when I consider the fit, storage and included accessories together. Check what the particular retailer includes, especially with used items or listings for the vest alone.

Things to consider before buying
A close fit should still allow comfortable breathing and movement. If you notice rubbing or strong pressure, review the adjustment and sizing rather than simply tightening everything further.
You may not need 12 litres if your runs are short and your pockets already hold everything. Compare the cost with how often you expect to use it. Also check the exact model, release, size chart and accessories: products sharing the ADV SKIN 12 name can differ.
My impressions are personal, and comfort varies between runners. Trying the vest on remains more useful than assuming someone else’s preferred size will work for you.
Who would I recommend it to?
I would put it on the shortlist for runners who want to carry drinks and snacks, care about a close fit, or want one vest for ordinary runs and longer outings. If your essentials are minimal, a smaller option is worth trying alongside it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a beginner use a 12L vest?
Choose according to your gear and fit rather than experience level. I find it useful for lighter runs, but a smaller option may be enough if you carry very little.
Should women always buy the W model?
Not necessarily. I noticed an underarm fit difference, but body shapes vary. Compare versions where possible and test breathing and arm movement.
What should I check when ordering online?
Check the product code, sizing chart, included accessories, and return or exchange conditions, including return postage. Match the item first, then compare prices.
My verdict: a running purchase I am happy with
The three positives for me are the close fit I found in a smaller size than expected, its usefulness even with a light load, and the included soft flasks. The capacity number alone would not have told me how much I would enjoy using it.
For my everyday runs and plans for longer distances, the ADV SKIN 12 has become a favourite piece of gear. Before buying, make fit your first priority.

Buying in Japan? Match the exact model first.
The Amazon.co.jp link opens search results, not a verified listing for the reviewed W GRADIENT model. Check the product code, size, included flasks and return terms. If you are outside Japan, compare local Salomon retailers and delivery costs before ordering.
Prices and availability vary. Existing Rakuten Japan links are ordinary search links.
Planning your next race?
My personal reflections on carrying essentials, food and cut-offs. Buying a vest is only one possible part of preparation; it is not a guarantee of finishing.
