Water-writing, step by step
Nothing to get perfect.
Just somewhere to begin.
Practise a stroke, watch it fade, and try again. Water-writing offers a simple introduction to the movement of the brush.
A brush. A little water.
Wet the brush and touch it to water-writing paper. The paper darkens where the water touches it.
One stroke at a time.
Start with a line. Notice how the mark changes as you lift, press and move the brush.
Let the page reset.
The mark fades as the water dries. Then try again. Drying time varies with the paper and room conditions.
See it in motion
A short look at the ritual itself.
Brush, water, paper — the movement itself, in under a minute.

Why MA
For the distance
between visits.
You may have fallen in love with Japan on a trip. You may still be dreaming of your first visit. MA starts with a simple idea: a small part of that connection can live in your everyday life.
A brush, a page, and a moment to yourself. Something to return to — and share with someone who feels the same way.

間 (ma) is the pause between brushstrokes — the space that gives the mark its meaning.
Before you begin
A few useful answers.
Can I order now?
Yes — use the Buy button on either kit to check out securely via Stripe. You’re welcome to contact us first if you have any questions.
Is this an in-person class?
This page introduces kits for practising at home. It is not a booking page for an in-person workshop.
Do I need to know Japanese?
You can explore brush movements without reading Japanese. Begin with simple strokes before working on characters.
What is the difference between water and ink?
Water-writing uses special reusable paper, and the marks fade as it dries. Ink makes lasting marks and requires different paper and care.
Where do you deliver? Are duties included?
We ship worldwide. Shipping is included in the kit price. Customs duties, import taxes and carrier handling fees, if any, are not included and must be paid by the recipient upon delivery.
Is the companion app available?
Companion learning tools and personalisation are part of the planned experience. Available features and access details will be confirmed before they are offered as kit inclusions.
Where can I find returns information?
Kits include consumable materials (ink and paper), so we’re unable to accept returns for change of mind once an order has shipped. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase. If your kit arrives damaged, contact us within 14 days with photos and we’ll review your request for a replacement or refund.
