Disclosure: MA Ritual is our own small business. We’re Wakana (Japanese) and Marcin (Polish).
When people think of Japanese calligraphy, they picture the finished piece. I love those too. But the part that matters most to me is the time between each stroke.
You may have fallen in love with Japan on a trip. You may still be dreaming of your first visit. MA starts with a simple idea: a small part of that connection can live in your everyday life.

What is 間 (ma)?
間 is the space between things: the silence between notes, the pause in a conversation. In calligraphy, it’s the breath before the brush touches the paper, and the stillness between one stroke and the next.
Put the phone down, focus on one stroke, then the next. The page fills slowly and your head gets quieter. That’s why I think of calligraphy as a reward you give yourself.

Worried about writing Japanese, or ink everywhere?
Start with water-writing. You write with plain water on special paper. It darkens like ink, then fades as it dries.
No stains, no cleanup, and you can practise as many times as you like. Watching the stroke disappear turns out to be its own small moment of 間.

A Polish husband’s first kanji
Marcin can’t write Japanese. The day we filmed MA was the first time he’d ever held a calligraphy brush. He ground the ink, worked stroke by stroke, and ended up grinning at his page.
You don’t need to read Japanese to feel what one focused stroke does. He showed me that.
