Where to Stay for Naeba Ski Trip?

Why We Chose Sarugakyo Onsen Instead of Staying Slopeside

If you’re planning a winter trip to Naeba Ski Resort, chances are you’re looking at hotels right in front of the slopes.

That’s what most people do.

We didn’t.

Instead, we drove about 30 minutes and stayed in Sarugakyo Onsen in Gunma — and honestly, it made our ski trip feel deeper, slower, and much more Japanese.

If you’re renting a car, this option is seriously worth considering 🚗

📍 Why Stay in Sarugakyo Onsen for a Naeba Ski Trip?

Here’s a quick comparison:

Stay at NaebaStay in Sarugakyo
Ski convenienceCultural immersion
Large resort hotelTraditional onsen ryokan
Busy atmosphereQuiet lake views
Functional stayMemorable experience

If you’re traveling as a couple (like we are), the second one hits differently.

🏡 The Room: Tatami + Beds + Two Hinoki Baths

Our room surprised us.

It wasn’t just a standard Japanese room. It had:

  • A living area
  • A tea space
  • Tatami flooring
  • A bedroom with real beds (important after skiing!)
  • Two hinoki cypress baths — one indoor, one outdoor
  • A garden view and a view of Aimata Dam

Waking up and seeing the lake in the morning light? Unreal.

And after skiing all day at Naeba…

There was a massage chair.

We sat down “just for a minute” and both nearly passed out. That good.

♨️ Onsen Details You Should Know

The public bath has:

  • 🔥 A hot bath
  • 🌡 A milder bath (great if you don’t like very hot water)

Sauna closes at 7 PM — go early.

We also had a 50-minute private onsen session included for free.

Outside temperature was below freezing. The water? Probably around 47°C.

Too hot?

There’s a wooden paddle to cool it down.
(Please don’t throw snow in. It weakens the mineral balance of the onsen.)

🍽 Dinner: A Tofu Kaiseki Experience (Very Gunma)

Gunma is famous for tofu and konjac.

Dinner was a full tofu kaiseki course.

Highlights:

✨ Smoked tofu — almost creamy, slightly sticky texture, perfect with sake
✨ Handmade yuba — we peeled it ourselves and dipped it in wasabi sauce
✨ Soy milk hot pot with meat — rich but surprisingly light
✨ Sashimi konjac — yes, sashimi isn’t only fish

Everything felt elegant but not heavy.

Even the plate shaped like the hem of a kimono was adorable.

We paired it with sake tasting flights:

  • Mizubasho
  • Kubota Hyakujyu / Senju / Manju

Each one clearly different. Drier as the grade went up.

🌅 Morning: Lake View & Healthy Breakfast

We woke up to a calm view of Aimata Dam.

Breakfast was buffet-style but tofu-based and gentle on the stomach.

My favorites:

  • Soy milk ice cream
  • Homemade soy milk bread

After a ski day, this kind of breakfast feels right.

So… Should You Stay in Naeba or Sarugakyo?

If you:

  • ❄️ Want pure ski convenience → stay slopeside
  • 🚗 Are renting a car
  • ♨️ Want private onsen time
  • 🇯🇵 Want a deeper Japanese cultural experience

Then Sarugakyo Onsen is a beautiful alternative.

It made our ski trip feel less like “sport tourism” and more like travel.
