  • How to Make Japanese Omurice—With a Cute Ketchup Cat Like in a Maid Café!

If you’re a fan of Japanese pop culture, chances are you’ve seen omurice (オムライス) before—maybe in anime, maybe in a maid café vlog, or maybe while scrolling through cute café photos on Instagram. This iconic Japanese dish is not only delicious but also a canvas for creativity!

Today, I’ll show you how to make Japanese omurice at home—with a special touch: we’ll draw a ketchup cat just like they do in real maid cafés in Akihabara. Whether you’re cooking for yourself or surprising someone special, this dish is guaranteed to make hearts melt.

    What is Omurice?

Omurice is a combination of “omelette” and “rice.” It’s a comfort food that typically features ketchup-flavored fried rice wrapped in a fluffy egg blanket. In Japan, it’s a nostalgic dish often enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

But the real magic? At maid cafés, the maid often asks,

“What would you like me to draw with ketchup?”

    And many customers request:

    “A cat, please!”

    So let’s get cooking—and drawing!

    Ingredients (for 2 servings)

    For the rice:

    • 2 cups cooked rice (warm)

    • 100g (3.5 oz) chicken thigh or breast, chopped

    • 1/4 onion, finely chopped

    • 2 tbsp ketchup

    • 1 tsp soy sauce

    • Salt & pepper to taste

    • 1 tbsp oil or butter

    For the omelette:

    • 4 eggs (2 per person)

    • 2 tbsp milk or cream

    • Pinch of salt

    • Butter for cooking

    For decoration:

    • Ketchup

    • Toothpick (optional, for precise drawing)

    How to Make It

    1. Make the Ketchup Rice

    1. Heat oil in a frying pan.

    2. Add chicken and cook until no longer pink.

    3. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent.

    4. Add rice, ketchup, soy sauce, salt & pepper. Stir until evenly coated.

    5. Divide the rice into two portions and shape into ovals on two plates.

    2. Make the Omelette

    1. Beat 2 eggs with 1 tbsp milk and a pinch of salt.

    2. In a non-stick pan, heat a little butter over medium heat.

    3. Pour the egg mixture in, swirl gently, and cook until just set but still soft.

    4. Slide or flip the omelette over the rice on the plate. Repeat for the second portion.

    3. Time for the Ketchup Art!

Now comes the fun part—decorate your omurice!

Using a ketchup bottle (or squeeze bottle), draw a cat face right on the omelette. You can draw:

    • Two triangle ears

    • Big round eyes

    • Whiskers and a little nose

    • A heart or paw print if you like!

If you’re confident, use a toothpick to help shape the lines more precisely.

    Optional: Say “Moe Moe Kyun!”

If you really want the maid café experience, present your omurice and say:

    “Oishiku nare, moe moe kyun!”

(It’s the “spell” maids say to make your food taste better!)

Final Touch: Take a Photo Before Eating!

Don’t forget to snap a photo of your masterpiece before diving in. Tag it with #OmuriceCat or #MaidCafeVibes to share with other Japan-lovers!

    Why Everyone Loves Omurice

Omurice is more than a dish—it’s an experience. Whether you grew up with it or are trying it for the first time, this simple yet heartfelt meal brings out your inner child. And with a cute cat drawn on top, it’s impossible not to smile.

So go ahead—draw with ketchup, eat with joy, and share with love.

Let me know in the comments:

What would you draw on your omurice? A bunny? A bear? Or maybe your favorite anime character?

  • Miso Cucumber: The Japanese Snack My Husband Can’t Get Enough Of

When people think of Japanese food, sushi or ramen usually come to mind. But sometimes, it’s the simplest dishes that capture hearts the most — like miso cucumber.

Yes, just cucumber and miso. That’s it. And yet, this humble snack has become one of my Polish husband’s favorite things to eat in Japan.

    What is Miso Cucumber?

It’s as straightforward as it sounds: fresh, crunchy cucumber served with a dab of savory miso paste. Sometimes the miso is mixed with sugar, sesame, or a touch of vinegar to create a perfectly balanced dip. It’s refreshing, salty, and slightly sweet — a snack that hits all the right notes.

    Why Foreigners Love It

When I first introduced it to my husband, I didn’t expect much of a reaction. But to my surprise, he kept going back for more.

“It’s addictive,” he said. “Like the Japanese version of veggie sticks with dip, but better.”

There’s something universal about crunchy vegetables paired with a tasty sauce. Plus, the umami-packed miso is a flavor many people outside Japan are just starting to discover — and fall in love with.

    A Taste of Japanese Simplicity

Miso cucumber isn’t fancy. You won’t find it on the menu of upscale restaurants. But that’s part of its charm — it’s everyday, honest, and incredibly satisfying. The kind of dish that makes you feel at home, even if you’re far away from your own.

In our house, it’s now a go-to snack on hot summer days, a side dish at BBQs, or just something we reach for when we want something light but full of flavor.

So if you’ve never tried it, give it a shot. All you need is a cucumber and some miso. And maybe — just maybe — it’ll become your new favorite too.

  • Hinamatsuri: Japan’s Doll Festival

Hinamatsuri (ひな祭り), or the Doll Festival, is a traditional Japanese celebration held on March 3rd to wish for the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls. It is also known as Girls’ Day. Families with daughters display a set of ornamental dolls (hina-ningyō, 雛人形) dressed in Heian-era court attire, representing the Emperor, Empress, and their attendants.

    How Do People Celebrate?

    Families typically celebrate by:

Displaying Hina Dolls (雛人形の飾りつけ): The dolls are arranged on a tiered platform covered with a red cloth.

Eating Special Foods (特別な食べ物を楽しむ): Traditional dishes include:

Chirashizushi (ちらし寿司) – A colorful sushi bowl with fresh seafood and vegetables.

Hishimochi (菱餅) – A three-layered rice cake in pink, white, and green, symbolizing health, purity, and growth.

    Hina-arare (ひなあられ) – Sweet, pastel-colored rice crackers.

Shirozake (白酒) – A sweet, low-alcohol rice wine (or amazake, a non-alcoholic version).

    How I Celebrated This Year

This year, I invited friends over and prepared chirashizushi along with a cheesecake inspired by hishimochi, layering it in pink, white, and green. It was a fun way to share the essence of Hinamatsuri while adding a creative twist!

Would you like to try celebrating Hinamatsuri in your own way? It’s a beautiful festival that brings joy and warmth, even outside Japan!

  • Sakura Season is Here! 🌸

Spring has finally arrived, and with it comes the most magical time of the year—sakura season! The streets, parks, and riversides are transforming into dreamy landscapes of pink and white. No matter how many times I see it, the sight of cherry blossoms in full bloom never fails to take my breath away.

    A Rollercoaster of Weather

This year has been quite unusual. We had an unexpectedly warm start to spring, and just when we thought we could enjoy hanami (flower viewing) in perfect weather, the temperature suddenly dropped! To make things even more challenging, the weekend brought rain, making it difficult to fully enjoy the fleeting beauty of the blossoms.

Despite the Rain, the Sakura Shine

Even with the unpredictable weather, the sakura remain as breathtaking as ever. There’s something poetic about seeing the delicate petals glistening with raindrops—almost as if nature is painting a scene straight out of a storybook. Walking under the canopy of pink, even with an umbrella in hand, still feels magical.

Sakura season is short, but maybe that’s what makes it so special. Every moment with these beautiful blossoms feels precious, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the present.

Did you get a chance to see the cherry blossoms this year? Let me know your favorite hanami spot in the comments! 🌸💖

  • A Hidden Gem in Tsukiji: The Perfect Kaisendon Date Spot with a Relaxing Upstairs Seating

Tsukiji is famous for its fresh seafood, but finding a quiet spot to enjoy your meal can be a challenge—especially if you’re on a date! Most popular seafood restaurants are packed, with long lines and crowded counter seats. But hidden among the bustling market streets, there’s a secret trick to enjoying a romantic and relaxed kaisendon date: finding a restaurant with a second-floor seating area.

Why Choose a Kaisendon Restaurant with Upstairs Seating?

Many of Tsukiji’s top kaisendon spots are small, with limited counter space. While that can be exciting for solo travelers or quick meals, it’s not always ideal for couples looking for a more comfortable and intimate dining experience. That’s why discovering a restaurant with a second floor is a game-changer!

Avoid the crowds: Most tourists rush to grab counter seats on the first floor, but upstairs often remains quieter.

Relax and enjoy: A cozy upstairs area means you can take your time savoring every bite without feeling rushed.

More space, more romance: Unlike the tightly packed counters, upstairs seating allows for more personal space, making it feel like a proper date spot rather than just a quick meal.

Our Experience: A Delicious Kaisendon in a Hidden Upstairs Space

While exploring Tsukiji, we stumbled upon a fantastic kaisendon restaurant with a hidden second floor, offering a peaceful escape from the market’s lively chaos. The moment we climbed the stairs, we found a cozy dining area with simple wooden tables and a relaxed atmosphere—perfect for a seafood date!

The kaisendon itself was nothing short of amazing. A bowl overflowing with the freshest cuts of tuna, salmon, uni (sea urchin), ikura (salmon roe), and sweet shrimp—each bite was a perfect balance of umami and freshness. Paired with warm miso soup and a side of pickled vegetables, it was a meal to remember.

How to Find This Kind of Hidden Spot

Since Tsukiji is filled with small, family-run restaurants, many places don’t advertise their second-floor seating. Here are some tips to find your own quiet kaisendon haven:

    1. Look for restaurants with stairs – If you see a narrow staircase inside or outside, chances are there’s extra seating upstairs!

    2. Ask the staff – If the ground floor is packed, politely ask if there’s upstairs seating available.

    3. Avoid peak hours – Visiting before 11 AM increases your chances of getting a quiet seat.

    4. Check the side streets – Some of the best hidden spots are just a few steps away from the main market area.

Make Your Tsukiji Kaisendon Date Special

A Tsukiji kaisendon date isn’t just about eating—it’s about the experience. From hunting for the perfect restaurant to savoring fresh seafood in a relaxed setting, it’s a fun and memorable way to explore Tokyo together.

So next time you visit Tsukiji with your partner, skip the crowded counters and look for a hidden upstairs seating area—you might just find your own secret seafood paradise!

  • Scent of a Woman” – A Blind Man Who Saw the Brilliance of Life

Starring Al Pacino, Scent of a Woman is more than just a drama—it’s a film that boldly confronts the question, “How should a person live?” The emotional climax, featuring a powerful speech, leaves a lasting impact on the audience.

A Blind Veteran and a Boy’s Unexpected Encounter

The story revolves around Frank Slade (Al Pacino), a blind, retired Army lieutenant colonel, and Charlie Simms (Chris O’Donnell), a scholarship student at an elite prep school.

Frank, having lost his sight, has also lost his will to live. Meanwhile, Charlie is faced with a difficult moral dilemma at school. Their paths cross when Charlie takes a temporary job looking after Frank, unknowingly joining him on what Frank intends to be his “final trip.”

A Man Who Had Given Up on Life Inspires a Young Boy with a Powerful Speech

The film’s most unforgettable moment comes when Frank delivers an impassioned speech on behalf of Charlie.

Charlie faces an unfair disciplinary hearing at school, where powerful faculty members try to pressure him into betraying his values. Just when it seems like Charlie is alone, Frank steps in.

    He declares:

“The right path is never the easy one. But those who have the courage to choose it are the ones who become true leaders.”

This speech is more than just words—it marks Frank’s own transformation. Through his journey with Charlie, Frank rediscovers the meaning of life and the importance of standing up for what is right.

What Kind of Person Should “the Last Man” Be?

At its core, Scent of a Woman asks us a timeless question: “How should a person live?”

Frank was once a man who had given up. But through Charlie, he is reminded that life isn’t meant to be lived in solitude—it’s about supporting and being supported by others. The speech he delivers isn’t just to defend Charlie; it’s Frank’s way of reclaiming his own purpose and dignity.

The film reminds us that true strength lies in making the right choices, even when they are difficult.

A Must-Watch for Those at a Crossroads in Life

Scent of a Woman is not just a compelling drama—it’s a film that makes you reflect on honor, courage, and the choices that define us.

Frank’s powerful speech is one of cinema’s most memorable moments, and if you ever find yourself at a crossroads, this film might just give you the push you need.

And of course, Al Pacino’s performance is nothing short of legendary, earning him a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor.

“When faced with a tough decision, which path will you choose?”

With this question in mind, I highly recommend watching Scent of a Woman.
