Waking up at 4AM on vacation sounds like a bad idea.
But in Chiayi?
It might be the best decision you make.
🌄 4AM Start: Chasing the Sunrise at Eryanping Trail
We left our hotel before sunrise and drove into the mountains.
Destination: Eryanping Trail (二延平步道) — one of the most famous sunrise spots near Alishan.
• Sunrise time: around 5:30 AM
• Parking: limited roadside space
• Walking time: 10–20 minutes to viewpoints
At first, it felt brutal.
Dark roads.
Sleepy eyes.
Cold air.
But then…
The sky slowly started to change.
Soft orange.
Deep blue.
Silhouettes of mountains emerging through the mist.
And suddenly — we understood why people wake up this early.
👉 This isn’t just a “view.”
👉 It’s a moment.
⚠️ Tips
• Wear warm layers (it’s colder than you expect)
• Bring a flashlight or use your phone light
• Go early — it gets crowded fast

☁️ Sea of Clouds at Shizhao Viewpoint
After sunrise, we drove about 15 minutes to Shizhao Viewpoint (石棹觀景台).
And this… was unreal.
A full sea of clouds (雲海) spread across the mountains.
The tea fields in the foreground looked perfectly sculpted.
Even better?
Almost no crowds.
It felt like a hidden world.
⚠️ Tips
• Best after early morning humidity (clouds form easier)
• Even on cloudy days, the atmosphere is magical
• Watch your step — some areas are uneven

🌲 Early Arrival at Alishan National Forest Recreation Area
We arrived at Alishan around 8:00 AM.
This timing made ALL the difference.
At 8AM:
• Quiet
• Easy parking
• Peaceful forest
By 11AM:
• Crowded
• Parking chaos
• Tour buses everywhere
👉 If you remember one thing from this article:
Go early. Seriously.
Inside the park, we explored:
• Sister Ponds (姊妹潭)
• Ancient cedar trees
• Peaceful forest trails
The air felt clean.
The atmosphere? Almost spiritual.

🍵 Lunch in the Tea Mountains at 野薑花庭園餐廳
After exploring Alishan, we stopped for lunch in the tea region.
This was one of the best meals of the trip.
What made it special:
• Small dishes, beautifully presented
• Flavors that felt both Taiwanese and familiar
• Relaxed, nature-filled setting
And the highlight?
👉 Fresh, locally grown tea.
We tried:
• Rich oolong
• Light, almost sencha-like tea
You can really taste the difference when tea is grown right there in the mountains.
⚠️ Tips
• Lunch hours can get busy — go slightly early
• Some menus may not have English (but staff are helpful)

🌉 Scenic Stop: Suspension Bridge Viewpoint
On the way back, we stopped at a mountain suspension bridge viewpoint.
No big crowds.
No ticket gates.
Just:
• Fresh air
• Deep valleys
• Endless green scenery
This is what makes a road trip in Chiayi special.
👉 You can stop anywhere.
👉 And find something beautiful.

🍜 Dinner: Beef Noodles at 佬鄉水餃牛肉麵
Back in the city, we ended the day with a classic:
Taiwanese beef noodle soup (牛肉麵)
This place stood out for a few reasons:
• Rich broth with herbal depth
• Tender beef
• Handmade dumplings
Even better:
👉 Staff spoke English and Japanese
👉 Very welcoming atmosphere
After a long day, it was the perfect comfort meal.
💡 Final Thoughts on Day 2
Day 2 in Chiayi felt like experiencing multiple worlds in one day:
• Sunrise above the clouds
• Tea mountains
• Sacred forests
• Local food culture
And the best part?
👉 It never felt rushed
👉 It never felt crowded (because we planned smart)
✔️ My Honest Advice
If you’re planning this route:
• Wake up early (it’s worth it)
• Rent a car (for flexibility)
• Visit Alishan before 9AM
• Take your time in the tea region
🌿 Why This Day Stays With You
Some trips are about checking places off a list.
But this day?
It was about:
• Feeling the air
• Seeing the light change
• Slowing down
And that’s what makes Chiayi special.
If you’re planning a Taiwan trip…
Don’t just go to Alishan.
👉 Experience the journey around it.
You might remember it even more than the destination.
