But after visiting countries with restricted freedoms, returning to Taiwan felt different. I found myself deeply reflecting on the fragility and preciousness of democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Taiwan, democracy wasn&#8217;t just given; it was fought for. \ud83d\uddf3\ufe0f\u2728<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udd6f\ufe0f The 228 Memorial Museum: Freedom is Not Free<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>228 Memorial Museum<\/strong> is a place I thought I understood, but this time, the stories hit harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned about the painful transition when the &#8220;dogs left and the pigs arrived&#8221; (a historical metaphor for the transition from Japanese rule to the KMT). Today, it has moved outdoors to the main plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why the change?<\/strong> 1. <strong>Transitional Justice (\u8ee2\u578b\u6b63\u7fa9):<\/strong> The current government is moving away from &#8220;authoritarian worship.&#8221; Moving the guards outside transforms the event from a ritual of &#8220;personality cult&#8221; into a public performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Accessibility:<\/strong> The outdoor ceremony is now a grander, more visible display for tourists, balancing tradition with modern democratic values. \ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f\ud83d\udeb6\u200d\u2642\ufe0f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udc15 From &#8220;Dogs&#8221; to &#8220;Pigs&#8221;: A Difficult History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of Taiwan is a complex one.
