When people think about skiing and snowboarding in Japan, places like Niseko and Hakuba often come to mind. But did you know that Japan actually has a Top 3 Ski Resorts<\/strong> list? One of them is Shiga Kogen<\/strong>, located in Nagano Prefecture\u2014and that\u2019s exactly where we headed for our winter getaway this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where We Boarded: Shiga Kogen Central Area<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shiga Kogen is massive. In fact, it\u2019s Japan\u2019s largest ski resort, made up of 18 interconnected ski areas<\/strong>. With so much terrain to explore, it can be hard to choose where to start. This time, we focused on the Shiga Kogen Central Area<\/strong> (\u4e2d\u592e\u30a8\u30ea\u30a2), which is known for its wide variety of slopes and convenient access. The conditions were fantastic\u2014fresh powder, plenty of space to carve, and slopes suitable for every level. Whether you\u2019re a beginner or a seasoned snowboarder, there\u2019s something here for everyone. One thing that really stood out to us was how uncrowded<\/strong> the slopes were compared to more famous resorts like Niseko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where We Stayed: Traditional Japanese Ryokan \u201cMasuya\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a full day on the slopes, nothing feels better than soaking in a natural hot spring<\/strong>. We stayed at a charming ryokan called Masuya<\/strong> (\u67a1\u5c4b<\/a>), located near the ski area. This ryokan is everything you want from a traditional Japanese inn\u2014tatami rooms, warm hospitality, and a beautiful onsen<\/strong> to relax in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made our stay even more special was the delicious kaiseki dinner<\/strong> (a multi-course Japanese meal), featuring local ingredients from Nagano. It\u2019s the perfect place to experience both Japan\u2019s snow culture<\/strong> and traditional Japanese hospitality<\/strong> at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
